About This Game Bright lights flare across the night sky. The wind rages outside the thin walls of your wooden cabin. A wolf howls in the distance. You look at the meagre supplies in your pack, and wish for the days before the power mysteriously went out. How much longer will you survive?Welcome to THE LONG DARK, the innovative exploration-survival experience Wired magazine calls "the pinnacle of an entire genre".The Long Dark is a thoughtful, exploration-survival experience that challenges solo players to think for themselves as they explore an expansive frozen wilderness in the aftermath of a geomagnetic disaster. There are no zombies -- only you, the cold, and all the threats Mother Nature can muster. The episodic story-mode for The Long Dark, WINTERMUTE, includes two of the five episodes that form its Season One. Both episodes were given a complete overhaul in December 2018, as part of the Redux Update: new mission structure, story beats, dialogue, animations etc.EPISODE ONE - “Do Not Go Gentle”Bush pilot Will Mackenzie (player character) and Dr. Astrid Greenwood are separated after their plane crashes deep in the Northern Canadian wilderness in the aftermath of a mysterious flash of light in the sky. Struggling to survive as he desperately searches for Astrid, Mackenzie comes across the small town of Milton, where he begins to understand the scope of this quiet apocalypse.EPISODE TWO - “Luminance Fugue”Mackenzie’s search for Astrid takes him deeper into the savage Winter wilderness. A mysterious trapper may be the key to finding Astrid, but can he be trusted? The first two episodes of WINTERMUTE represent approximately 15 hours of gameplay. Episodes Three to Five are included in the price of the game, and will be unlocked for free as they are released.Features performances by Jennifer Hale, Mark Meer, David Hayter, and Elias Toufexis (Episode Three), and the music of Cris Velasco.Survival Mode is the free-form, non-narrative survival sandbox that has been honed over nearly three years in Early Access. Survival is your only goal, and death your only end. Make your own survival story with every game.NO HAND HOLDINGThe game challenges players to think for themselves by providing the information but never the answers. You have to earn the right to survive.PERMADEATHWhen you die in Survival Mode, your save is deleted. Every decision matters. [Note that WINTERMUTE does not feature permadeath.CONDITION & CALORIESMonitor your Hunger, Thirst, Fatigue, and Cold as you struggle to balance resources with the energy needed to obtain them. Every action costs Calories, and time is your most precious resource. Choose your path carefully.SCOUR THE WORLD FOR SUPPLIESOver 100 gear items including Tools, Light Sources, Weapons, First Aid supplies, Clothing, and more.A VAST LIVING WORLDExplore a 50 square kilometre Northern Canadian wilderness in search of precious supplies. In Winter. Dynamic time of day, weather, wildlife presence, etc. provide just enough randomness to keep things challenging.SURVIVAL OF THE FITTESTHunt, fish, trap, climb, map, search for life-saving food and gear items, and try to avoid dying from the hostile wildlife, succumbing to hypothermia, frostbite, or dysentery (amongst other uncomfortable afflictions), find and maintain your life-saving gear. Hunt and be hunted by: Wolves, Bears, Moose, Rabbits, Deers, Crows, and more to come in future updates.CHOOSE YOUR EXPERIENCEFour distinct Experience Modes let you find a challenge level you are comfortable with, such as Pilgrim Mode, which is meant to be quiet and pensive, all the way to Interloper Mode, where only the most experienced survivors have a chance to last a week. If none of the four Experiences suits you, use Custom Mode settings to tailor your Survival Mode game to your specific tastes.Features the music of Sascha Dikiciyan.Several standalone Challenge Modes offer objective-based experiences designed to last 1-3 hours each, such as Whiteout -- the race to gather enough supplies to prepare for a monster blizzard. Or Hunted, where you need to escape a murderous Bear. Complete them to unlock Feats that provide long-term gameplay benefits in Survival Mode. Five Challenges exist at launch, with more on the way in future updates. In addition to releasing the remaining three episodes of WINTERMUTE, we intend to continue updating Survival Mode, as we have done with about 100 updates/hotfixes over the past three years of Early Access. Keep in mind that your purchase of The Long Dark entitles you to all five episodes of WINTERMUTE, as well as updates to Survival Mode along the way. The Long Dark is the gold standard by which every other survival game would aspire to be. The player navigates endlessly from quiet and calm isolation to moments of sheer terror and survival. The threat of death to cold, hunger, and wild animals is always in the back of your mind (and sometimes much closer). Yet even as your character struggles there is a peace about the game that brings players to grips with the one true enemy - yourself. One misstep could literally be the beginning of the end in a series of rapidly unfolding events but the reward of each successful step forward is a victory against the unrelenting cold, unending hunger, and thirst which seeks to deprive you of your sanity.Winning is not an achievement. Winning is simply surviving.. So far: pretty entertaining. Most of what I enjoy is the lonesome desolate feel of almost every location I've been to, massive props to the environment and setting. I like the storms and blizzards, the howling wind and also the dead quiet, the increased visibility of the Aurora Borealis because of the electro-magnetic event. I enjoy the feeling of finding a stash of supplies that I've desperately needed and also the frustration of find a "good spot" only to find out it is mostly empty. However, as much as i enjoy exploring the world that has been created in The Long Dark I have some criticisms regarding the realism that the creators are going for (see #3 for my biggest issue):1) Food weight\/ calories\/ calorie drain: 2 kg of wolf meat feeds you for most of a day when you're just staying warm inside, being restful. Rabbit meat does even less, and when completely empty of calories is takes over 5kg of rabbit to become full.Just to put that in perspective: 2kg = about 9 McDonalds Big Macs, 5 kg is approximately TWENTY THREE BIG MACS in weight.2) Clothing insulation: having grown up being outdoors-y in "The Canadian North" I feel like clothing does far less than it should in this game. I like the damp\/wet\/frozen aspect of clothing conditions and the fact that wind protection and waterproofness are included. But near the end of my first survival play-through I had finally found what I assume is the best clothing for dry-cold weather and going outside in -15 for an extended period is still a harrowing life\/death situation.Having comfortably gone hiking IRL in -40 conditions wearing essentially what I had in-game, I'm calling BS on clothing stats.3) What ended my first playthrough: Bulletproof Bear? Having equipped myself appropriately and getting used to the horrible iron sights, I decided to hunt down my local bear. Waited until the bear was facing away, took 1 shot behind the left shoulder (typically a kill shot IRL), followed that up with 3 headshots... aaaaaaaaaand I'm getting mauled to death :-\/I have a 30-30 Winchester in my family and through its years has killed 8 brown\/black bears (avg weight: 120 kg) and a grizzly (avg weight: 250 kg), we also have a .303 (which is essentially the same caliber, with higher velocity and heavier bullet) that while not having killed any bears, has taken down a moose (avg weight: 450 kg). I appreciate that the game is trying to be difficult and intense, but darn, that is a huge flaw in my opinion as far as realism goes. A glancing skull hit with a .303 would stun if not kill, three would leave the skull in pieces if they were soft-point rounds, if they were surplus FMJ they would continue through from head to hips piercing vitals along the way.. The sale that is going on now (ends May 10) is a terrific buy. This game is incredibly immersive and has the continuing support of developers. A great buy at its list price, but on sale, it's a fantastic deal. I highly recommend it.. Tedious.I picked this up a couple years ago in early access, figured it could only get better with time. Now, it's doomed to haunt my game library for all time, mocking me along with my other ghostly investments. It hit me all at once as I was trudging through the story mode, juggling my over piled inventory and cursing myself for not opting a higher difficulty before investing too much time to start over. Now, I realize the above reason is my own fault, and I'm not holding it against this game at all. In a lot of ways, this game does some stuff right and nails some of the stuff its going after. However, getting it right doesn't necessarily translate to fun. There's a lot of positive reviews out there, a lot with low time investment, and even my own is fairly scant to start criticizing, but I'm going to go ahead and do it anyway.Pros:-Unique: No zombies, cannibals, aliens or other beasties; just you against the Canadian wilderness where only deer, wolves, rabbits and maybe one or two bears exist.-You can scavenge a bunch of goodies from houses, Including several different brands and flavors of soda (Unlike The Forest which only had orange... why is all this orange soda washing up on the beach? Where is it all coming from? Why can't cannibals climb ropes?). Variety's always a plus during the apocalypse-You can wear a total of 4 shirts and 4 pairs of pants to try and keep yourself warm... two pairs of socks and two hats, or scarves, if you're into that (Oddly, only one pair of gloves though).Cons:-Maybe my biggest qualm with this game is how sloooow everything moves. Without proper fuel, just lighting a fire takes something like 10 or 15 seconds, and its cold out there so you light a lot of fires.-Walking is slow, getting around is slow, opening drawers is slow, conversations are slow, cooking is slow; I get the desire for realism, but this game lays it on a little thick.-On normal difficulty, as I learned, this game becomes a winter walking sim where you loot one bedroom houses, sprain your ankles from all the loot you're carrying and chug toilet water whilst occasionally scaring off wolves with flares. Literally.-The story, at least what I saw of it, felt pretty generic; your classic 'Guy Crashes his Pontoon Plane into the Canadian Wilderness trying to Appease his Icy Ex-Wife' skit again.Really, the biggest thing that's missing here, and someone in another review already pointed this out as well, is that this game doesn't have a really strong sense of progression a lot of the good survival games have. Honestly, it just becomes tedious hours of monitoring various bars and pausing what you're doing to sate them, sometimes for long periods if you're freezing and in a bad spot. That sense of accomplishment I get from these kinds of games was missing for me here, that satisfaction of doing things well and becoming stronger. I can't really express where and how, exactly, this went amiss, because I don't really know myself, just that it did in my own opinion. If you can get this game right now for the $7 or so when its on sale, grab it, because it is certainly well worth that much at least. What it does right, it does well, and there is easily entertainment value to be had here... just not $30 worth.. Best survival game I've ever played. Pros: - immersive experience of deep solitude- detailed survival game play: keep yourself fed, rested and warm- lots of large regions- great weather effects- new content released several times a year- survival sandbox mode, special challenges and even a single player story mode- beautiful sound track and soundscape- developers aim for interesting\/challenging game play vs 100% realism: Your actions have consequences. Certain tools will only last so long; what do you use them for? - not a shooter. There are several weapons, but this is not the focus of the game and never will be.- no zombies! - map items and weather varies, so game play keeps fresh- great weather effects. A blizzard feels like a blizzard!- amazing attention to detail; clothes will weigh you down and get wet. The more you carry, the more rattling noise you'll make. - certain random elements makes for a rewarding exploration experience. I won't spoil it for you.Cons: - no co-op (I wish!)- no matter what you wear, your hands and shirt will always be the same. I want to see my hands wearing my beautiful mittens! Seriously; if you want a survival game that you can sink your teeth in; this is the one for you.. So to talk about the game, first we gotta hand it to game the good parts they did. When you start to play the game it feels very immersive, have a beautiful atmosphere, very detailed mechanics etc. Everything feels nice and polished, you feel the urge to explore more, do new things and get the know the game. There is a story or the exploration gamemodes ofc. So you can do whatever you want and play however you want. That is the dream right?BUT, here is the problem. Game designed to be on a illogical dynamics to keep you in a constant grinding so you have to play for long hours. Game offers you very feeble content and you start to face it after many hours of grinding. The things that you have found in first few hours are the %95 of the content. After 10 hours you ask yourself "What the hell am I doing?" and there is nothing to answer this. The magic of those few hours suddenly vanishes into thin air and leave you a this bland visual grinding. Every story you have is basically "I'm damaged need something to fix it moment". Ofc when this happens first time, you have the adrenaline rush, and maybe the second time and the third time. But after that you start to feel little bit tiring. But it doesn't stop there same thing happens more and more and more and more up to a point you feel this is it, this is the game. Game just a dark sinkhole with nothing to really do.You literally play games to clear your mind from the real life's constant grinding and the game expects you to the same thing with a feeble content. Remember FarCry 3 quote about the madness? This is the game version of it.. Very good gameBut when will episode 3 release?
